Bummerfest

Ah Bummerfest...there is nothing that signals the beginning of summer in our fair town like Bummerfest. Officially...the Summerfest Arts Faire...features live music, fabulous food and art of all mediums. The Garlick Press has been attending Bummerfest for as long as we can remember.

The first item on my list is usually a new honey pot from one of the pottery artists. However, we have gone the entire year without even so much as a crack in last year's pot.  But those garlic pots on the top shelf caught my eye as did the French Butter dish.

Because I seem to have a chicken thing going on now..these guys cracked me up!

I often wonder what inspires artists when they begin working with different mediums.

Perhaps it is the delicious smell of leather...that inspires this artist.

Oil paints...oh I wish this were a medium I had talent enough to work with.

Dean found these intriguing and brought one home on his wrist. The artist uses horsehair to braid into handsome bracelets. I passed...it's a horse thing remember.

You'll find the classic outdoor festival food at Bummerfest including wood-fire pizzas, Navajo tacos, corn dogs, kettle corn, and so on. Are you hungry yet?

Dripping with butter, we both opted for a roasted corn on the cob.

Delicious, warm and crispy funnel cakes...I'll take one for The Teenager please.

The festival sits on the grounds of the old tabernacle on Main Street. Trees surrounding the timeworn building reach skyward and music drifts up and dances through the old pines.

Classic face painting delights both children and their parents.

Bummerfest activities include a children's art yard where little ones can create a variety of art projects themselves.

As we began to wind down Bummerfest 2011, we strolled by this woodworking booth. The craftsman takes antique wood items and re-purposes them into new pieces of furniture.

Turned topsy turvy on it's side, this old door becomes a magnetic memo board.

I can't explain it...somehow this clever door is now hanging on the wall of my home. My plan...fill it with some of my most favorite photos.

The gorgeous colors, textures, sights, smells and sounds of Bummerfest...imprinted in my creative soul for another day.

A Teenager and His Nephew

Three months ago, The Teenager became an uncle for the second time...this one was a nephew. This past week, Uncle and Nephew discovered one another...creating a bond between them that only Uncles and Nephews share.

There is something about Uncle Chet that is simply enchanting to Henry...almost magical.

And there is something about Henry that brings back the little boy in Chet.

Plans are already being formulated for Henry to learn lacrosse skills from his Uncle Chet. I imagine he will develop a love of music and guitar from him also.

Chet and Henry...just a couple of dudes chillin' on the front porch sporting aviator sunglasses.

Sixteen years from now, Chet will be teasing about cute girls and Henry's dating prospects. At The Garlick Press teasing and bantering are learned at an early age.

Late one night while staying with us this week, Henry refused to go to bed. We were all watching the first movie of the always thrilling Lord of The Rings trilogy. He stayed up through the whole l-o-n-g movie with his Uncle. Sometime during the evening Mama Cass captured this hilarious footage on her iPhone of Henry practically giggling his diaper off at Uncle Chet.

Henry and Chet...best buds forever. Can you tell they really like each other?

All Cooped Up In The City

Once upon a time there lived a Chick who grew up in the country. After falling in love, she married herself a handsome Prince who carried her off to the big city...and then to another city... not quite as big. The Chick was indeed a city girl who loved red shoes and all was good!

One fine day, The Chick and her Prince met a Fabulous Family who had a charming chicken coop filled with dazzling fowl. This mesmerized the Chick and her Prince so much that they decided to raise chickens themselves. In exchange, they convinced the Fabulous Family to keep bees.

Plans were soon hatched and The Prince contracted with The Teenager to be an apprentice coop builder. Because power tools were involved, The Teenager happily accepted!

Attention to detail was exhibited throughout the project. A bell was installed so Olivia and Henry may announce the discovery of freshly hatched eggs with a ringing throughout the land.

Dangling water and food pails were filled and ready for use.

Hanging in a big city hardware store, The Fabulous Mom of The Fabulous Family discovered this giant perfect snowflake.

A shopkeepers bill jingles softy as the red door is opened and closed.

A painted heart for the original "red one" because she is always on the minds of The Chick and The Prince. And because she would absolutely love this crazy, and whacked out idea of raising chicks in the city.

The Prince designed 4 nesting boxes where the hens will lay their eggs. The door swings open from the outside, so fresh eggs can be collected quickly and efficiently!

Approximately 100 trips to the local Home Depot were traveled during the construction process. The Prince refused to keep track of the cost of the coop...let's just say it put a dent in the royal coffers.

The Chick and The Prince have determined that raising hens requires lots of food and supplies. A secure cupboard was constructed to store it all!

The Prince made a proclamation that the only rooster allowed will be the one perched high on the roof of the coop.

Finally... after many rain delays...the Prince called for the moving in of the chickens.

General Tsao took command of the move and became the first hen to try out a nesting box.

The girls were giddy as they cackled about...discussing "cheep" decorating plans and exploring all the space their new coop contains.

Penguin was the first brave one to navigate the royal chicken ramp using those chicken feet and razor sharp toenails.

A birds eye view of the chickens settling into their new palace.

The Chick got such a kick out of this photo...look at all those chicken footprints in the sand!

During the move, a spy was discovered on the grounds of the royal coop... lurking on the perimeter.

And another spy...this one was not so much lurking but staring.

As the sun sinks low in the sky that evening a giant sigh of relief came from The Prince. The chickens were nestled safe and happy in the new coop, The Chick was happy for another day and there was peace throughout the kingdom.

THE END

The morale of this story is...You can take The Chick out of the country but you can't take the country out of The Chick!
