The Woman in Red

Confession...When Dean came up with this latest idea, I might have been a little skeptical. OK, maybe very skeptical.

Meet Marv-The Woman In Red. She is a hot new companion for Harv.

Harv had melted down to just a small pile over the past few weeks and it was time for freshening up.

I love it when Harv is back at the cemetery...it's the first thing I see when I drive in.

This is the look the teenager gets right before he hucks a snowball at you.

Oh hello Mr. Bear...nice to see you. Thanks for keeping watch over Jocie's place.

This is where it starts to get wacky.

I mixed up some red food coloring with water in a spray bottle, and then Dean starts spraying it on our girl.

Marv has acorns for eyes, and berries for a mouth. She's a very "green" snowgirl. She is also sporting one of Jocie's bandanas.

Chet has suddenly grown white facial hair on his chin.

"Look Mom...look what I made." He's a proud man, this Dad is.

I wonder how well you can see Marv when I pull back a little...

and how about now? Yup, I think I can see her just fine. Great idea Dean!

Bellies and Babies

Miracles...do you believe in them? Or do you believe that serendipitous moments that lead to a joyful outcome are just that...sweet serendipity?

After that life-altering day in March nearly three years ago, many well-wishers proclaimed that our grieving family had paid our dues...assuring us that difficult days were over and much happier days were ahead. Sometimes I wish I was still innocent and held such naive beliefs, but I understand that life holds no such guarantees. Absolutely no one is keeping score of how many heartaches we each experience in a lifetime. Simply...life is not always fair...to anyone! Sometimes, the true measure of a person becomes evident when the "happily ever after" doesn't happen.

Enter my beautiful, intelligent first-born child. Amidst grieving for her baby sister, she was quietly enduring another grief...one I have had no experience of. Her empty arms were aching for a healthy pregnancy and she found herself only dreaming about the next chapter of her life...motherhood! I respect and admire both her and my sweet son-in-law for their outlook and knowing that for them, it was time to take a different and positive direction towards starting their family.

Enter miracle #1...baby Olivia Jocelyn. Through a series of amazing events and circumstances, Olivia found her way to her Mommy and Daddy. With awe and respect I will forever be grateful for those special people that made Olivia's adoption so memorable. She is more than I could ever have imagined in a grandchild. This adorable little cherub has no idea the big bundle of joy she has showered on each one of us.

And this brings us to our second miracle...Miss Olivia will soon be a big sister.

Why is it that miracles happen to some people and not to others? Why are some children saved from horrific accidents walking away unscathed...and others leave this world without even as much as a goodbye? I don't think any of us will understand the exact hows and whys of these baby miracles...but rather more importantly, a Mommy and Daddy with an enormous amount of love will have another babe to welcome to their little family.

And what of the timing...this new baby is due in March. There is not a single member of this family who discounts the magnitude of this birth date.

Talking over the phone last night, Lawyer girl and I remarked to each other of the joy that shines off our new little mother...she practically glows. Head over heels in love with baby Olivia, she is blissfully happy in her new role of motherhood.

Will she have her hands full...yes! She'll have them completely full of gorgeous babies, and we wouldn't have it any other way.

But not to worry I assure Mommy Cass...Olivia is already doing such grown up things. She's eating solid foods and almost sitting up by herself.

And look at her adorable growing piggies...she'll be walking before we know it.

She nearly has the bottle holding thing figured out too.

"There is in every woman's heart a spark of heavenly fire,

which lies dormant in the broad daylight of prosperity;

but which kindles up and beams and blazes in the dark hour of adversity."
-Washington Irving

Miracle or serendipitous joy...I suppose it doesn't matter.

But what of the day when the miracle doesn't come...I know we will certainly find joy some other day.

Hey Olivia, what should we name this new baby?

Dog-gone it Valentine

Saint Valentine's Day...established around 496 AD and named after Saint Valentine. Traditionally known as a day to celebrate love and affection usually with flowers and confections. The accompanying note became known as a Valentine. To celebrate... a dinner for my two boys on this Valentine day.

"Valentine...you'd be purr-fect if you were mine."

"If you wanna be mine...fork over your heart."

"I'll be sunk...if you won't be my Valentine."

"I'm gonna 'pop' a 'corny' question...will you be my Valentine."

"To my Valentine...I'm head over heals in love with you."

"Love me...love me knot...you'll still be my Valentine, no matter what."

"Dog-gone it! I wanna be your Valentine."

So many adorable vintage Valentine cards that I remember signing when I was a little girl. I wish I still had some, but they just don't make them like that anymore.

But wait...what's this? Look what showed up in my Inbox...this is way better than any vintage Valentine!

Happy Valentines to all you lovely people in my life...I heart you!

Burgers, Fries, and An Award

What does it take to earn the much coveted "Mom & Dad of the Day" award? Let's say you are driving home from the big city around dinner time and you know there are 5 starving teenage boys waiting for you when you walk in the door, raiding your pantry every moment you are away. Must feed them!

In-N-Out Drive-thru..."Hi there, I'll have 7 cheeseburgers, 7 fries, and 1 strawberry shake." It's at least an hours drive home and shakes for the boys are a ridiculous idea.

The teenager LOVES In-N-Out Burgers. We once went there twice in an hour...he had a cheeseburger, shake, and fries both times. Have you seen his feet lately? He needs to eat a boatload of food to fill up those feet.

Were they happy to see us...what do you think?

Hey, are you going to eat all of those fries?

I love this burger more than anything mom...except you of course.

Excuse me...did someone forget about Izzy's cheeseburger?

Leftover fries...give them to this teenager, he is a bottomless pit!

Someone has decided a choke hold is necessary to take control of the leftover fries.

What do you think..."Mom & Dad of the Day" award...I believe so!

The Thing Is

...we are mountain people. It's who we are. When fall's last leaves are scattering gracefully from drowsy trees we can nearly hear the snow approaching. We wax our skis in anticipation and wait impatiently.

Shortly after the tragedy, I couldn't imagine that we would ever be able to play in our winter mountains again. And look at us now...we not only play there, but we laugh and feel light-hearted joy. These days I can't imagine what winter would be like if we were not able to play in those same mountains.

Mountain frolicking, there is nothing quite like it. Whether it is fast groomers of corduroy,  fresh deep Utah powder, or a sweet line of intense moguls.

Dropping everything and everyone, the teenager will even wake up early to come play with us in the mountains.

The Zen Master of skiing has been helping the Teenager to work on his 180's and 360's. I gifted the Zen Master a new bright orange coat for his birthday. Now when he is speeding his way down the mountain we can spot him anywhere.

 Cheeseburger for lunch anyone?

Mountain friends...they come in all colors and sizes...we love them all.

This mountain friend thinks he is a rock star. He should keep his day job.
